Katie’s riding career started like many others with lessons at the local riding school, at which she quickly became addicted. She got her first loan pony at the age of 10 and joined the local pony club. For Katie, the only way was up, as she found progression with multiple trips to Pony Club championships in dressage, show jumping, eventing and Tetrathlon, but it was within eventing that Katie’s passion developed.
Aside from horses, Katie’s life-long dream had always been to become a Veterinarian and in 2005 she gained a place at The University of Liverpool to study Veterinary Medicine. She opted to defer her entry for a year and focus on her eventing as a working pupil for Lucinda and Clayton Fredericks, which turned out to be the most amazing year. Whilst there, she took her own horse from novice to 2* level and rode a variety of horses from unbroken three year olds to the very best in the world, including: Headley Britannia and Ben Along Time; an incredible experience! Katie travelled to some amazing events as a groom, both in the UK and abroad. It was then that she gained insight into running a yard and keeping top level horses fit and well, whilst at the same time getting the best out of them at events. At the end of her 18 months there, she decided to keep eventing as a hobby and to being chasing the veterinary dream!
A few years down the line, Katie is a full time Equine Vet at Milbourn Equine in Kent. Katie has a real passion for her job and works as part of a great team. Every client is different and Katie likes being involved in keeping their horses sound and well to achieve their aims – however big or small. Being a rider herself certainly helps to see things from their perspective and to be realistic yet optimistic about what can be achieved for each individual.
During her five years at Liverpool, Katie produced young horses to sell on. Seeing them learn and progress is so rewarding! Six years ago, Katie bought Templar Justice (TJ) from Templar Stud as a two year old. TJ is an absolute jumping machine, loves the job and has given Katie so many highs (and inevitably a few lows). Having finished 2nd in a CCI* as a six year old, TJ was put on the world class Equine pathway, long listed for the 2* Europeans, competing at Gatcombe championships and ended 2014 competing at the World Young Horse championships at Le Lion D’Angers! Like all top level athletes, TJ has certainly tested my Veterinary skills but with the help of Peptizole (for his gastric ulcers) he is on top form, and has upgraded to Grade 1.
Katie also has a homebred four year old that is making her eventing debut in 2015. She is great fun, a very quick learner, has a cracking jump and at 15 hands is a real pocket rocket. Add to these two my lovely but sometimes manic cocker spaniel, Taz, and there is little time for any other hobbies although I try to fit in a skiing holiday each.
Katie says “Norbrook products are very important to me both through the pharmaceutical drugs used at work and at home all of which I would highly recommend to others.”
